TINEA CAPITIS IN CHILDREN: ITS ERADICATION IS POSSIBLE IN ANAMBRA STATE
Founder, JCS Global Initiatives
🎯 What is Tinea Capitis?
Tinea Capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp, commonly affecting children between the ages of 3 and 14. It causes itching, hair loss, scaling, and can spread quickly if not treated.
⚠️ Major Causes in Our Communities:
✅ Poor Hygiene Practices
• Sharing of unclean combs, hats, and pillows
• Infrequent washing of hair and body
✅ Overcrowded Schools & Homes
• High child-to-child contact in classrooms and markets
• Limited access to clean water and toilets
✅ Lack of Health Education
• Many parents and teachers are unaware of early symptoms
• Traditional remedies delay proper treatment
✅ Contact with Infected Animals
• Cats, dogs, and goats often carry the fungi
• Children play barefoot or sleep near livestock
✅ Malnutrition
• Poor diet weakens children’s immune systems
• Especially common in low-income or displaced families
✅ Scalp Trauma from Hair Practices
• Tight braiding, hot combs, and harsh creams damage the scalp
• Open wounds allow fungi to invade easily
🧡 OUR CALL TO ACTION
JCS Global Initiatives urges parents, teachers, and caregivers to:
✅ Encourage personal hygiene and regular bathing
✅ Stop the sharing of hair tools and clothing
✅ Watch for early signs of infection
✅ Seek medical treatment immediately
✅ Report outbreaks to local health centres
✅ Support children with nutritious meals and clean environments
📍 Together, we can protect the health and dignity of every child in Anambra State.
Let’s end the spread of scalp infections—one clean head at a time!
